Updated 8:22 PM PDT, February 29, 2024. MOANDA, Congo (AP) — The oil drills that loom down the road from Adore Ngaka’s home remind him daily of everything he’s lost. The extraction in his village in western Congo has polluted the soil, withered his crops and forced the family to burn through savings to survive, he said.
Most of the roughly 280 million hectares (Mha) of additional land suitable for oil palm in the Congo Basin are found in the Democratic Republic of Congo (60%), Cameroon (11%) and the Republic of Congo (10%). Many heavily forested countries in the Congo Basin are setting national targets to increase production to meet national and regional demands.

Africa’s contribution to global palm oil supplies declined from 77 percent in 1961 to less than 4 percent in 2014, as the crop boomed in Malaysia and Indonesia. But many of the Congo Basin’s most forested countries are dreaming big. Cameroon aims to double palm oil production by 2035, and Gabon has ambitions of becoming a leading exporter.

SG Sustainable Oils Cameroon (SGSOC) hold a land lease to develop palm oil on 20,000 hectares of land on the fringe of the Congo Basin rainforest and the company is hoping to receive an extended lease on the land.
Key messagesThe Congo Basin is rich in biodiversity and stores an estimated 25%–30% of the world’s tropical forest carbon stocks. As agricultural land becomes increasingly scarce in Southeast Asia, and regulatory pressures continue to intensify, the Congo Basin could become the next frontier for oil palm expansion. Three agricultural departments in the Republic of Congo (Plateaux, Pool and Cuvette-Ouest) with high potential for producing palm oil were targeted for this assessment. The Land-use Planner, a tool developed by the European Forest Institute as part of the EU REDD Facility, was used to model and represent the impact of future land-use choices
The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) originated in West and Central Africa. Some of the earliest scientific breakthroughs that led to the development of the palm oil industry were made in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC, earlier known as the Belgian Congo); these include the elucidation of the genetics of the kernel shell thickness and the identification of the basic engineering

Large-scale palm oil investment in the Congo Basin has taken a new dimension in recent years. For many, the region has become the new palm oil frontier of the world. Overall, about 1.1 million hectares of land deals have been signed in the region since the early part of the last decade.
Longstanding issues of corruption get part of the blame. More than 60% of Congo’s 100 million people get by on less than $2.15 a day, according to the World Bank. Congo’s leaders argue that’s one reason that drilling should be expanded — to contribute to economic growth. The sites up for auction contain an estimated 22 billion barrels
- Will oil palm production increase in the Congo Basin?
- Land area allocated to oil palm increased by 40% in the Congo Basin and five additional top-producing countries in Africa between 1990 and 2017. Without intervention, future production increases in the region will likely come from expansion rather than intensification due to low crop and processing yields, possibly at the expense of forest.
- Can palm oil mills reduce deforestation in the Congo Basin?
- Sustainability strategies initiated by companies and aimed at certifying palm oil mills are unlikely to be effective at curbing deforestation in the Congo Basin. Smallholder farmers are an engine of growth in the region¡¯s palm oil sector, and recent evidence suggests they are actively clearing forest to expand.
- Where can oil palm be grown in the Congo Basin?
- Most of the roughly 280 million hectares (Mha) of additional land suitable for oil palm in the Congo Basin are found in the Democratic Republic of Congo (60%), Cameroon (11%) and the Republic of Congo (10%). Many heavily forested countries in the Congo Basin are setting national targets to increase production to meet national and regional demands.
- Will Indonesia-style palm oil come to the Congo Basin?
- Large scale palm oil operations were a feature of the region during the colonial era and people living in and around the Congo Basin have long had small scale farming and palm oil operations. But the scale of SGSOC¡¯s current project may represent the arrival of the Indonesia-style palm oil industry to the region.
