In terms of share of production, sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) accounts for about 6% of global oil palm production, yet stands out as one of the largest importers of palm oil (7.9Mt) (FAO, 2020). Despite the region being suitable for oil palm – which is native to forests in West and Central Africa 2 – production is low and lags behind the global level.
Cameroon is the 7th in terms of palm oil production in Africa, producing about 450,000 tons of crude palm oil annually which is relatively small as compare to Malaysia [[15], [16], [17]]. Although the waste production from the palm sector is comparatively small, however, the subject of waste management should be treated equally by all.

Palm oil (Elæisguineensis) is a plant native to the countries bordering the Gulf of Guinea. Extracted from the pulp of the fruit, palm oil is rich in fatty saturated acids, and solid at room temperature. As all vegetable oils, palm oil does not contain cholesterol. Palm oil, with an annual global production of 50 million tons, equating to 39%
Up to 20 million hectares of new oil palm plantations could be established in this region over the next decade. In Cameroon’s forested zone alone, over 1 million hectares is now being targeted by oil palm companies. This cultivation would generate much-needed development in Africa and increase global food supplies.

production of edible and industrial oils (Carrere 2006). Palm kernel waste (after the oil has been extracted) is also used as animal feed and in co-firing in electricity generation. The palm oil industry is worth at least USD 20 billion annually (Hoyle and Levang 2012).

Although Cameroon, the largest palm oil producer in Central Africa, produced more than 450,000 tons in 2020, it still imports about 60,000 tons a year to meet its domestic demand. Most of the imported palm oil comes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Gabon.

Over 81.1 Mt of palm oils were produced globally in 2019–20, of which 72.3 Mt was mesocarp oil (hereafter referred to as ‘palm oil’) while 8.8 Mt was palm kernel oil (Statisa 2020). It is estimated that palm oil or palm kernel oil are present as ingredients in at least half of the products found in a typical supermarket.
Since 1990, oil palm cultivation, because nibbling large zones in dense forest areas of Cameroon, becomes the main driver of deforestation. It leads to the loss of plant and animal biodiversity as well as engaging soils and water pollution, which raises questions about its sustainability. Nowadays, palm plantations occupy almost 400 000 ha shared between agro-industries, elites and small
- What drives oil palm expansion in Cameroon?
- Third, oil palm expansion in Cameroon is predominantly driven by non-industrial producers and coordinated around a burgeoning informal milling sector ( Ordway et al., 2019 ). Cameroon can thus be looked upon as a major region of growth when it comes to oil palm production and expansion in Africa.
- Could new oil palm plantations be established in Cameroon?
- Up to 20 million hectares of new oil palm plantations could be established in this region over the next decade. In Cameroon¡¯s forested zone alone, over 1 million hectares is now being targeted by oil palm companies. This cultivation would generate much-needed development in Africa and increase global food supplies.
- Are non-industrial producers driving oil palm production in Cameroon?
- Non-industrial producers are driving oil palm production in Cameroon. We analyze the drivers of oil palm production in Cameroon. Access to information and land tenure systems play a crucial role in farmer decision-making. Market orientation also matters in oil palm production.
- Where does oil palm grow in Cameroon?
- Cultivation of oil palm is more prevalent in the Southwest, South, and Littoral regions of Cameroon ( Li et al., 2015). In these regions, the expansion of oil palm is mostly carried out by non-industrial producers at the expense of secondary forests, with minimal expansion into pristine forests.
