3 Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Definition POME is the unavoidable wastewater arising from palm oil production at a palm oil mill (i.e. the point of origin). POME consists mostly of water, and a small percentage of oil and solid matter. POME volume and composition varies by Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) composition, processing setup and
As a result, some palm mills' wastes, such as POF and shells, are recycled to generate electricity for the mill's palm oil extraction process, producing massive amounts of waste known as palm oil

In general, palm oil residue/waste is used to make compost. This is due to the high content of organic chemicals in it. For example, palm oil trunks have a high potassium content, even up to 1000 kg/hectare [ 57 ]. Besides that EFB residue can be used as raw material for mushroom cultivation.
The palm oil industry is essentially ideal for the availability of abundant biomass resources, where the multifaceted residues are vital for energy production through the conversion of biomass waste into value-added products simultaneously. This article discusses the utilisation of palm oil and its residues in the energy and transportation sector.

Oil palm plantations in Malaysia have been discussed in detail by Corley and Tinker et al. [30]. Generally, palm trees are planted in Malaysia for food applications like frying oil and cooking oil. However, palm oil industries generate huge amounts of biomass residue which can be utilized in different industries [31], [32], [33], [34].
PPF is another solid biomass waste produced from the palm oil mill. PPF is produced as a result of the removal of nuts from the fiber. PPF contains mainly of mesocarp fiber, some kernel shell fragments, and broken kernels. Generally, PPF contains about 5–6% of residue oil after extraction of CPO (Lau et al. 2006 ).

The most plentiful residue of oil palm trees is oil palm frond (OPF), which accounts for up to 70% of total palm waste . According to recent studies, OPF is an excellent source of renewable carbon and lignocellulosic content for cultivating a variety of species to produce essential biochemical products such as pigments, enzymes, and succinic acid.
By this time, growth and production have slowed down. The number of leaves in an oil palm plant increase from 30 to 40 in a year at the age of 5 to 6 years. After that, the generation of leaves decreases to about 20 to 25 per year [9]. The average economic life-span of the oil palm is 25 years to 30 years [10].

The price of palm oil in the market is rising because of its industrial and domestic applications. Different types of wastes are generated from palm oil processing, ranging from palm oil sludge, palm shell, and waste palm mesocarp fiber. Pressed palm mesocarp fiber contains 5–8% palm oil, which can be recovered using the appropriate method. In this study, an attempt has been made to recover
- How to recover residue oil from palm oil milling process?
- Attempts have been made to recover the residue oil from PPF by using solvent extraction and supercritical fluid extraction (Lau et al. 2008 ). Besides solid wastes, the palm oil milling process also generates liquid wastes from three sources, namely sterilizer condensate, separator sludge, and hydrocyclone wastewater.
- Are oil palm residues a problem in the palm oil industry?
- The oil palm residues are a definite matter of concern in the palm oil industry, whereby with every 10% of oil generated, approximately 90% remains as a waste biomass material.
- How does oil palm industry produce waste?
- Oil palm industry generates a large quantity of residues and wastes in the form of empty fruit bunch, palm kernel shells, trunk of the plant, fibre, leaves and others. When palm oil is extracted and processed, it also produces effluents with high organic matter,…
